"Vergesst Kluivert, Maldini und selbst Beckham", schrieb die englische Zeitung The Sun und erklärte Schiedsrichter Pierluigi Collina zum Star der Fußball-Europameisterschaft 2000. Sein Ruf ist legendär. Manndecker respektieren ihn, und Frauen geraten in Verzückung, wenn er Rot zeigt.

Schiedsrichter werden meist als notwendiges Übel betrachtet. Sie werden verachtet, beschimpft und taugen immer zum Sündenbock, wenn eine Mannschaft es wieder einmal versäumt hat, das gegnerische Tor zu treffen. Der italienische Schiedsrichter Pierluigi Collina hat es in den letzten Jahren geschafft, dieses Image grundsätzlich in Frage zu stellen. Seit er 1995 auf die Liste der internationalen Schiedsrichter rückte, gilt er als unumstrittener Star seiner Gilde, dessen Souveränität und Konsequenz auch Fußball-Laien begeistert.

Fünfmal bereits wurde Collina zum Welt-Schiedsrichter des Jahres gewählt. Sein Buch "Meine Regeln des Spiels" erzählt von seinen Anfängen als 17-Jähriger und natürlich von den Höhepunkten seiner einzigartigen Karriere: vom Champions-League-Finale 1999 zum Beispiel, das für Bayern München zum Fiasko wurde, und vom WM-Endspiel 2002, in dem Oliver Kahns tragischer Fehlgriff Brasilien auf die Siegerstraße brachte. In klarer Diktion beschreibt Collina, was für ihn das Amt des Unparteiischen bedeutet und welche physischen und psychischen Voraussetzungen erforderlich sind, um sich im kommerzbestimmten internationalen Fußballgeschehen zu behaupten. Und erstmals gibt der weltgewandte Referee Einblick in sein Privatleben. "Ich hasse Schiedsrichter, ich könnte sie manchmal sogar umbringen", gab Alt-Trainer Udo Lattek einst zu Protokoll. Pierluigi Collinas Buch sollte auch für ihn zur Pflichtlektüre werden.
